What DR GPT™ Means for the Future of AI in Healthcare
Harvey Castro, MD, MBA, known as DR GPT™, is an emergency physician, TEDx speaker, author, Chief AI Officer, and healthcare AI keynote speaker helping leaders understand artificial intelligence in medicine. Healthcare AI is already shaping patient search, clinical documentation, hospital operations, patient safety, access, and executive strategy. Through DR GPT™, Harvey helps hospitals, boards, medical conferences, health systems, and technology leaders move beyond hype and make practical decisions about responsible AI adoption. His work connects frontline clinical judgment with future medicine, digital health, healthspan, digital twins, wearables, governance, and patient trust. AI should not replace the human side of medicine. Used wisely, it can reduce friction, support clinicians, improve access to information, detect risk earlier, and help patients become more active participants in their care. The future of healthcare AI needs physician leadership, ethical strategy, and human centered design. Artificial intelligence is no longer something healthcare leaders can place in the future.
It is already here.
Patients are using AI to understand symptoms before they ever walk into a clinic. Physicians are using it to summarize, search, document, and think through complex information. Hospitals are exploring AI for operations, safety, access, triage, education, and patient communication.
That is why I created DR GPT™.
I am Harvey Castro, MD, MBA, an emergency physician, author, TEDx speaker, Chief AI Officer, and healthcare AI keynote speaker. DR GPT™ is my public platform for helping healthcare leaders understand artificial intelligence through the lens of real clinical care.
Not hype.
Not fear.
Not a sales pitch.
Just the practical truth of what happens when powerful technology meets patients, clinicians, boards, executives, and health systems.
Healthcare AI Needs a Physician Voice
I believe healthcare AI needs more physician leadership.
That does not mean physicians should be the only voices in the room. Far from it. The future of medicine will be built by clinicians, patients, engineers, ethicists, operators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and leaders working together.
But healthcare is different from many other industries.
When an AI tool fails in healthcare, the result is not only a bad customer experience. It can affect a diagnosis, a delay, a medication, a treatment plan, a family, or a life.
That is why clinical judgment matters.
Physicians understand uncertainty. We know that patients rarely arrive as clean data. They arrive with pain, fear, incomplete histories, social pressures, changing symptoms, and questions that do not fit perfectly into a form.
AI can help, but only if it is designed and used with respect for that reality.
The Real Promise of AI in Healthcare
The promise of AI is not that it will replace the human side of medicine.
The promise is that it may help restore it.
If we use AI wisely, we can reduce administrative burden, improve access to information, support earlier risk detection, help patients understand their care, and give clinicians more time for the work only humans can do.
That work includes listening, examining, explaining, comforting, deciding, and taking responsibility.
The best future is not artificial intelligence instead of human intelligence.
The best future is better medicine because both are working together.
What I Help Leaders Understand
Through DR GPT™, I speak with hospitals, medical conferences, executive teams, boards, health technology companies, and global organizations about the future of AI in healthcare.
The questions I help answer are practical.
How should leaders evaluate AI tools before adopting them?
How do hospitals protect patient trust while using automation?
What should boards know about AI governance?
How can clinicians use AI without losing clinical judgment?
What does responsible innovation look like in a health system?
How will digital twins, wearables, healthspan science, and predictive medicine change care?
These are not abstract questions. They are the questions healthcare leaders are facing right now.
Why DR GPT™ Exists
DR GPT™ exists because healthcare needs translators.
We need people who can stand between the exam room and the boardroom. Between the software demo and the patient story. Between the promise of AI and the operational reality of medicine.
My goal is to make healthcare AI easier to understand, safer to adopt, and more useful for the people it is supposed to serve.
I want leaders to feel prepared, not overwhelmed.
I want clinicians to feel included, not replaced.
I want patients to feel protected, not processed.
I want innovation to move forward with courage and care.
The Future Is Being Built Now
Healthcare AI is going to keep moving.
The real question is whether we will shape it with wisdom.
Technology alone will not create the future of medicine we want. That future will require clinical judgment, ethical leadership, patient centered design, governance, education, and trust.
That is the work I am committed to through DR GPT™.
If your organization, conference, board, or leadership team is trying to understand what AI means for healthcare, I would be honored to help guide that conversation.
